Blikk Hungary’s photojournalist Tamás Korponai won first place in the Sports Actions category at the 81st Pictures of the Year International photo contest with his sports-themed action photo titled ‘Downfall’.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest last summer, our colleague photographed Femke Bol, the Dutch world record holder in the 400-meter flat track, on the first day of the championships, capturing the moment when the athlete fell on her nose in the last position of the medley, five meters before the finish line. However, this moment was not the end, but rather the beginning of the story enclosed in the picture. On the last day of the World Championships, Femke Bol ran in first place, with the best result in the world so far, in the final women’s relay, and with this, she crowned the 2023 sport event with a crazy moment surrounded by the wild celebration of the audience!

Tamás Korponai‘s photo therefore tells sport fans about an incredible sporting achievement, and at the same time it surpassed many of the masterpieces of photojournalists in the international photography competition. Congratulations, Tamás!
