For the sake of the sustainable development of our earth, our immediate environment and our society, we can put our strongest resource, our journalistic mission, to work in the most effective way: we inform, inspire, and make our readers’ own decisions easier with credible and comprehensible examples. After all, we reach millions of readers through our pages, the interfaces of our online publications and social channels. What we can do, as one of Hungary’s largest publishing companies, is to put the power of the media at the service of ensuring that future generations can live on a more livable planet.

We translate the idea of sustainable development into everyday language. We bring you closer to the steps and opportunities that lead to more conscious consumption, support of disadvantaged social groups, partnerships, more peaceful coexistence, quality education for everyone, and the preservation of the diversity of the living world. This is how we support our readers in their individual solutions.

We make you think. We give advice.

Responsible company

In 2021, we scrutinized our operations and with the involvement of leading experts in the field of professional carbon footprint assessment and ESG evaluation of medium and large companies – Bureau Veritas and Planet Fanatics’ Network – we measured the ecological footprint of our operations on a voluntary basis, evaluated our operations according to a system of sustainability criteria and created our sustainability strategy based on the results. We are committed to climate neutrality: we will gradually reduce our emissions in the future. In the case of emissions that cannot be reduced, we consider long-term sustainable compensation to be followed.

Did you know?

In the base year of 2019, the total emission of our company group was 9,980 MG co2e. Almost 85% of this is the so-called it belongs to scope 3 group, i.e. emissions that are not controlled by the company. By 2020, we have reduced our emissions by more than 1,000 tons, or 12%. But that’s not enough, let’s move on! Click here to view our carbon footprint compliance certificate.

This is what we do to reduce the carbon footprint of our office operations:

  1. We transformed the work processes of our Budapest office: we introduced hybrid work and a desk-sharing system, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of commuting and operating the office building.
  2. We are modernizing the energy supply of our office building, cooling and heating with a heat pump instead of using natural gas.
  3. We continue to increase the efficiency of our solar panel and collector park. Our solar collector and solar panel system has been operating since 2011 on an area of 135 square meters on the roof level of our office building, which support the daily operation of the building with green energy.
  4. With our solar panels, we produce an average of 20,000 kwh of energy per year, which greatly reduces our electricity consumption, and the solar collectors play an effective role in the supply of hot water and the heating of boilers – thus indirectly reducing our gas consumption.
  5. We make energy procurement more sustainable through guarantees of origin.
  6. We replace traditional office light sources with LED technology.
  7. We support alternative options for urban transport, we have established bicycle storage facilities for our colleagues.

Responsible print production

In addition to our online media platforms, the backbone of our offer is a wide range of printed pages. Therefore, our most important task is to produce and deliver our magazines to our readers along sustainable product production and distribution processes.

Among other things, egg holders are made from our unsold printed press products.

This is what we do to reduce the carbon footprint of our printing processes:

  1. We use EU Ecolabel certified paper for our printed products, and we only source paper from sustainable forestry for our publications.
  2. We only pack our magazines if we have a special offer for our readers. In recent years, we have replaced our packaging material with environmentally friendly biofilm, which we are gradually transitioning to using. In the case of GLAMOR and GEO magazines, we only use this.
  3. We are optimizing our distribution processes and remittance management, increasing the amount of recycling.
  4. We make our printing processes more sustainable by using optimal materials, improving efficiency and continuously renewing printing technology.

Responsible digital production

Online data traffic generates a significant ecological load: according to 2020 reports, the use of digital technologies and the Internet contributes about 4% to the emission of greenhouse gases. As the next step in our sustainability efforts, we are starting to measure and reduce the carbon emissions of our digital media portfolio, as the first company in the Hungarian press industry. The process will start in the summer of 2023 by measuring the carbon efficiency of blikk.hu, the domestic news site with the largest number of daily visitors, in cooperation with Carbon.Crane. This may be followed later by the measurement of kiskegyed.hu, sportal.hu, glamour.hu and egészségkalauz.hu.

Ringier Hungary’s partner in this process is Carbon.Crane and the Website Carbon Monitor developed by them, which makes it possible to measure the carbon emissions of the given website by examining the data usage, and also offers solutions to reduce it, so that the visitors ultimately have a faster and better user experience, in addition, browse an environmentally friendly website.

Responsible employer

We also apply our attitude-shaping activity to ourselves. Our employees are not just partners in this, but in many cases they themselves initiate a new project that takes us forward, either in terms of more conscious recycling, various charitable collaborations, or even making our immediate environment greener. As an employer, we embrace these and support them with resources.

Among other things:

  1. We collect garbage selectively in our office building.
  2. By improving the eating conditions at work, we encourage our employees to eat consciously.
  3. With the involvement of our colleagues, we jointly green the communal spaces of our office building.
  4. We fight to reduce food waste and deprivation, and our cooperation with the Hungarian Food Bank Association goes back many years. Together with our colleagues, we organize a charity cookie fair every year, and we donate the entire amount to the Food Bank. In the fall of 2021, 30 of our volunteer employees prepared dinners for 150 people in need as part of the JótéKonyha initiative.
  5. On Christmas 2021, we shared the joy of charity with our company’s key partners: with the gift cookie packages of the Food Bank, we not only provided sweet moments for our business partners, but by purchasing them, we also supported the preparation of 47 food packages per box, for a total of 5.5 thousand.
  6. With the involvement of the Sétaműhely, we have developed a themed city walking program called Planet-Friendly Budapest, through the stations of which interested people can learn about a number of urban opportunities (including a packaging-free store, a donation shop, a community garden, a fair trade cafe) that can reduce their own ecological footprint.
